Position Descriptions
Find the role that fits your experience, equipment, and the kind of rally day you want to have.
These are the most common rally volunteer roles. Most are a full-day commitment, and nearly every role puts you in or near your vehicle for much of the day. If you can only help for one day, we can still use you.
Radio Operator
Radio operators work at stage starts and finishes, service, spectator areas, and other locations where communications may be needed. A radio operator along a stage route also serves as a course marshal.
Qualifications // A current amateur radio license and, at minimum, a working 50W 2-meter mobile radio with a 5/8-wave antenna. Handheld radios are not sufficient.
Sign UpCourse Marshal
Course Marshals staff intersections, driveways, and other access points along a closed stage to help keep unauthorized traffic off the course. It is a great role for people who want to see rally action up close.
Qualifications // No special qualifications; reliable transportation is important.
Sign UpSpectator Marshal
Spectator Marshals help prepare official viewing areas and keep spectators within approved locations. They may also help guide vehicle traffic and maintain access for emergency vehicles.
Qualifications // No special qualifications; comfort guiding people is helpful.
Sign UpStart / Finish Controls
Start and Finish crews check in cars, record timing information, start competitors, and complete control paperwork. It is a close-up view of rally operations and scoring.
Qualifications // No special qualifications; reliable transportation is important.
Sign UpMedical
Medical workers are positioned throughout the event to provide initial assistance until additional support arrives. This is one of the most important and difficult roles to fill.
Qualifications // A current doctor, nurse, EMT, or qualified First Responder credential is required.
Sign UpHeavy Sweep
Sweep personnel assist competitors whose vehicles have mechanical trouble or leave the course, helping get vehicles safely to a place where their crews can retrieve them.
Qualifications // A capable full-frame 4WD SUV or truck, recovery tools, and basic tools are required. A winch and amateur radio capability are helpful.
Sign UpCommittee
The organizing committee is always looking for people ready to assist in new ways or shadow existing roles. Committee work occurs throughout the year, especially in the months before an event.
Qualifications // A willingness to learn, collaborate, attend meetings, and take on meaningful event-planning work.
